Sophiatown

Sophiatown

2003, Other
During the 1940s and 1950s, the Johannesburg suburb of Sophiatown is a vibrant and sizable racially mixed area at a time when apartheid is firmly entrenched in the nation. The neighborhood, with its wealth of jazz and blues clubs, becomes a center for political, artistic and criminal activity. The documentary interviews many of the people who performed and lived there before it was bulldozed in the mid-1950s, including Nelson Mandela, Abdullah Ibrahim and Miriam Makeba, among others.
