A rich entrepreneur is emotionally distant from his daughter, Barbara (Shirley Temple), after his wife's death. Feeling unloved, Barbara turns to her nanny for support. But when Barbara becomes lost in the city, she decides to abandon her home altogether and joins a pair of radio entertainers (Alice Faye, Jack Haley), who delight in the young girl's vocal talents. After impressing their producer (Gloria Stuart), the trio take their new act to the airwaves -- but what of Barbara's father?
