In 1880, Irish politician Charles Stewart Parnell (Clark Gable) returns home from a successful trip to America. Although jailed briefly for sedition, Parnell is cleared and stands in the House of Commons. He then supports the aspirations of Capt. William O'Shea (Alan Marshal), who although estranged from his wealthy wife, Katherine (Myrna Loy), asks her to assist him in befriending Parnell. When the militant-minded opposition tries to discredit Parnell, Katie stands by the politician.
