A pregnant woman, Mary (Jacinta Cormier), moves from her small town to Halifax, Nova Scotia, to flee her deadbeat boyfriend, Earl (Leon Dubinsky). Once her daughter is born, Mary poses in art school classes to survive financially. She wants to become an artist herself, though, and eventually explores new creative directions. Mary returns to her hometown when she learns that her grandmother (Evelyn Garbary) has fallen ill. Afterward, Mary tries to see if she can balance her life and creativity.
