Beyond the Sea
In 1980, a bus driver in Havana crashes through the fence of the Peruvian Embassy in a bid for political asylum. This event sets off an outbreak of protests in Cuba, with thousands of people demanding to leave the island. In response, Cuban leader Fidel Castro opens Mariel, a port city about 90 miles off the coast of Key West. Over the course of a few months, a number of private American ships flock to the port and carry 125,000 Cubans to the United States.
